What’s the Problem?

This recall affects Serena & Lily Nash Convertible cribs with a white finish and oak trim, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1].

“Serena & Lily has received 5 reports of the leg partially detaching from the headboard/footboard,” CPSC said.

Affected cribs were sold as part of a kit that includes the crib and toddler bed rails. The kit was sold under SKU CRIB10-NC1, which was printed on the order and confirmation.

The recalled cribs were sold at Serena & Lily stores nationwide, through the Serena & Lily Catalog, and online from September 2018 through April 2020 for about $900.

If you purchased a crib that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact Serena & Lily for a repair, replacement, or refund.

This recall began on October 29, 2020.

Injuries Associated with Cribs, Playpens and Bassinets: Study

A study published in the journal Pediatrics [2.] in March 2011 looked at the epidemiology of injuries related to cribs, playpens, and bassinets among young children in the U.S.

For the study, the researchers conducted a retrospective analysis using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for children under the age of 2 years who were treated in U.S. emergency departments between 1990 and 2008 for injuries linked to cribs, playpens, and bassinets. They identified 181,654 children in this category during the 19-year study period.

Most of the injuries involved cribs (83.2%), followed by playpens (12.6%) and bassinets (4.2%). The most common type of injury was a fall from a crib, playpen, or bassinet, representing 66.2% of injuries. Soft-tissue injuries comprised the most common diagnosis (34.1%), and the most frequently injured body region was the head or neck (40.3%).

The authors concluded that “Given the consistently high number of observed injuries, greater efforts are needed to ensure safety in the design and manufacture of these products, ensure their proper usage in the home, and increase awareness of their potential dangers to young children.”
