What’s the problem?
Vivimed issued the recall after routine testing identified the presence of unacceptably high levels of NMBA, FDA said. This marks at least the 4th company to issue a recall for Losartan over similar concerns in recent months.
What is NMBA?
According to a PubChem summary, studies have shown that NMBA can cause cancers in rats including bladder cancers, which means that NMBA qualifies as a known potential human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). Based on the available information, the risk of developing cancer in a few patients following long-term use of the product containing high levels of the impurity NMBA cannot be ruled out.
If You Are Taking Losartan
If you are taking any medication that is affected by this recall, you should not stop taking it without consulting your physician, as doing so could result in adverse health consequences. To date, no reports of cancer or other serious side effects have been linked to the recalled Losartan, FDA said.
