More Losartan Recalled for Contamination with Drug Linked to Cancer

May 7, 2019 – Vivimed Life Sciences has issued a nationwide recall for 19 lots of losartan potassium tablets over concerns the product may be contaminated with N-Nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid (NMBA), an impurity that has been linked to an increased risk for cancer, according to an FDA Recall Notice issued on Friday.

The recalled Losartan was produced in 25 milligram, 50 milligram and 100 milligram tablets, FDA said. Affected products were distributed to wholesale, retail and mail order pharmacies by Heritage Pharmaceuticals.

What’s the problem?

Vivimed issued the recall after routine testing identified the presence of unacceptably high levels of NMBA, FDA said. This marks at least the 4th company to issue a recall for Losartan over similar concerns in recent months.

What is NMBA?

According to a PubChem summary, studies have shown that NMBA can cause cancers in rats including bladder cancers, which means that NMBA qualifies as a known potential human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). Based on the available information, the risk of developing cancer in a few patients following long-term use of the product containing high levels of the impurity NMBA cannot be ruled out.

If You Are Taking Losartan

If you are taking any medication that is affected by this recall, you should not stop taking it without consulting your physician, as doing so could result in adverse health consequences. To date, no reports of cancer or other serious side effects have been linked to the recalled Losartan, FDA said.
