Update: Mirena Lawsuits Centralized in New York
April 26, 2017 – More than 100 federal Mirena lawsuits have been consolidated as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2767) in the District of New York. The complaints allege that the levonorgestrel released by Mirena increases the risk of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), also known as pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) and benign intracranial hypertension (BIH).
What is Mirena?
Manufactured by Bayer, Mirena is a long-acting hormonal birth control product. The IUD is a small, flexible, T-shaped device that is implanted directly into the uterus. Mirena contains a synthetic progestin called levonorgestrel which is slowly released into the uterus over time. Because it releases hormones directly into the uterus, it releases a lower level of hormones into the body than birth control pills.
What’s the Problem?
Unfortunately, the levonorgestrel contained in Mirena has been linked to an increased risk for benign intracranial hypertension. However, the IUD’s labeling does not feature a warning about this potential side effect. Lawsuits are now being filed which accuse Bayer of withholding information about this risk.
Benign Intracranial Hypertension Symptoms
BIH occurs when an excessive amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up inside the skull, which increases pressure on the brain. This condition, which is also called pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), presents with symptoms that may include:
- Blurred vision
- Double vision (diplopia)
- Eye injury (papilledema)
- Buzzing sound in the ears (tinnitus)
- Vision loss
Side Effects of Mirena
Mirena has also been linked to the following serious side effects:
- Device migration
- Perforation of the uterus.
- Embedment in the uterine lining
- Erosion of adjacent areas such as the vagina
- Inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and internal organs (Peritonitis)
- Intestinal perforations or obstruction
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Ovarian cysts
- Irregular spotting or bleeding
- Painful menstruation
- Pelvic pain
- Breast tenderness
- Streptococcal sepsis
- Ectopic Pregnancy
- Intrauterine pregnancy
- Wrongful death
