August 13, 2012 – Sliced apples distributed to fast food and grocery retailers around the country are now being recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially deadly foodborne pathogen. To date, no illnesses have been reported, but listeria was found on equipment used to produce apple products by Missa Bay LLC, owned by Ready Pac Foods Inc. of Swedesboro, N.J. Signs and symptoms of listeria food poisoning (listeriosis) may include fever and muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

What’s the problem?
According to an article published last Friday in the Huffington Post, the following products are included in the new listeria food poisoning recall:
- packaged apple slices distributed to McDonald’s and Burger King;
- packaged fruit, veggies, salads and sandwiches containing apples distributed to Wawa convenience stores and Wegman’s grocery chains;
- apple and fruit snacks with “Ready Pac” labels;
- apple salad kits with “Safeway Farms” label
These products have use-by dates of July 8 through August 20. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators for items with these use-by dates, and retailers have been asked to check store shelves and inventories to make sure none of the packages are there. Anyone concerned about a listeria food poisoning illness should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Listeria Food Poisoning (LIsteriosis)
Listeriosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems. Signs and symptoms of listeria food poisoning may include:
- muscle aches
If listeriosis spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include:
- stiff neck
- loss of balance
Despite the fact that outbreaks of listeriosis are relatively rare in the United States, listeria food poisoning remains a significant public health threat. Public health officials estimate that upwards of 2,500 cases of listeriosis – approximately 500 of which will result in death – occur each and every year nationwide. Expecting mothers are nearly 20 times more likely to contract the disease than the general public, a statistic made even more frightening by the fact that the infection has been known to travel into the fetus through the umbilical cord.
