Woman Diagnosed with “Cobalt Lung” After Smoking Marijuana Vape
A recent study published in the European Respiratory Journal described the case of a woman who developed metal pneumoconiosis, more commonly known as cobalt lung, after just 6 months of using a marijuana vape pen.
The patient, who had no other risk factors other than intermittent cigarette smoking during her teenage years, presented with reduced lung function, according to the researchers. Lung biopsy showed fibrosis and several multi-nucleated giant cells within the alveolar spaces. Her condition improved after 3 months of mycophenolate mofetil followed by prednisone, but 30 months after diagnosis, her lung function was still impaired.
Considering the lack of risk factors, the researchers concluded that the patient’s condition was likely caused by use of a marijuana vape.
What is Cobalt Lung?
Metal pneumoconiosis is a form of pneumonia that typically affects people exposed to dust from hard metal objects, according to the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Hard metals are used for industrial applications which require extreme hardness and high-temperature resistances, such as for cutting tools, oil well drilling, and jet engine exhaust ports. Professions exposed to hard metals include metal workers, machine operators (e.g. grinders and lathes), and diamond polishers. Metal pneumoconiosis is also known as cobalt lung, tungsten carbide pneumoconiosis, hard metal lung, and giant cell interstitial pneumonitis.
Cobalt Lung Symptoms
- Difficulty breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Cough, which may produce phlegm
- Tightness in the chest
Is Vaping Safer Than Smoking Cigarettes?
At least 39 deaths from lung disease and more than 2,000 severe lung illnesses have been linked to vapes and electronic cigarette devices, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency says Vitamin E acetate may be a potential cause for the injuries associated with vaping, but there are likely other factors. Many of the injured patients report vaping marijuana products or marijuana and nicotine products, but others only vaped nicotine products.
