In recent years, a link between Lipitor and kidney damage has become increasingly clear. In fact, Pfizer, the company that makes Lipitor, is currently facing a large number of lawsuits in courthouses around the country on behalf of patients who developed kidney damage after taking the drug. Signs and symptoms of Lipitor kidney damage may include pain, skin discoloration, urinary disruption, cardiovascular issues, digestive problems, and cognitive disturbances.

How Can Lipitor Cause Kidney Damage?

It has recently been found that a severe form of muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis can occur in patients taking the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor (generic: atorvastatin). Diffuse muscle pain and tenderness, fatigue, and fever are signs that immediate medical intervention is required. Over time, the effects of rhabdomyolysis can lead to kidney damage if the condition is not treated.

The kidneys regulate the balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body and filter waste products from the bloodstream. If a person becomes severely dehydrated, the kidneys will retain as much water as possible and the urine becomes concentrated. Patients suffering from rhabdomyolysis experience a significant amount of muscle breakdown which clogs the filtering system of the kidneys. Often occurring because of trauma or crush injuries, it can also be caused by statin medications like Lipitor.

Signs and Symptoms of Lipitor Kidney Damage

If kidney damage goes unmanaged, wastes can accumulate in the bloodstream and make the patient feel ill. He or she may then develop symptoms such as:

  • pain
  • skin discoloration
  • urinary disruption
  • cardiovascular issues
  • digestive problems
  • cognitive disturbances

Additionally, kidney damage increases the patient’s risk of developing heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may occur gradually over a long period of time. Early detection and treatment are critical in keeping Lipitor kidney damage from getting worse. If the condition goes untreated over a prolonged period of time, it may eventually lead to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation to maintain life.
