In what appears to be the latest in a wave of similar litigation, a Virginia woman has filed a product liability lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant Pfizer after allegedly developing type 2 diabetes while taking the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor (generic: atorvastatin). Lipitor is currently among the best-selling drugs on the planet, raking in cumulative sales of over $125 billion since first being approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. In addition to being linked to type 2 diabetes, Lipitor has also been associated with liver damage, memory loss, and rhabdomyolysis.

As a result of developing type 2 diabetes, Colbert must now regularly monitor her blood sugar levels, follow a strict diabetic diet, and take prescription drugs to manage her diabetes. She also claims that she is now at an increased risk for side effects associated with diabetes, including the heart disease she was trying to prevent, as well as blindness, neuropathy, kidney disease and other adverse health complications.
Colbert is the latest to join a growing number of women around the country who are pursuing litigation against Pfizer, alleging that the company knew – or should have known – about the risks associated with Lipitor, but that it failed to adequately warn both the public and medical communities about these risks. In addition to being linked to type 2 diabetes, Lipitor has also been associated with:
