September 20, 2013 – Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. faces yet another lawsuit filed on behalf of a Louisiana woman who allegedly developed type 2 diabetes after taking the company’s controversial cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor (atorvastatin). The complaint alleges that Pfizer knew – or should have known – about the health risks associated with Lipitor before bringing it to market, but that it failed to adequately warn the public and medical communities about these risks. In addition to diabetes, Lipitor has been linked to rhabdomyolysis, memory loss, kidney damage, and liver failure.

What’s the problem?
The new Lipitor diabetes lawsuit was filed last week on behalf of Faith Johnson in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana. According to court documents, Miss Johnson was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after she started taking Lipitor to help lower her cholesterol in 2011. Instead, as a result of her condition, Johnson is now at an increased risk of heart disease and must undergo regular blood testing, adhere to a restrictive diabetic diet, and take prescription medications to manage her diabetes.
Miss Johnson joins a growing number of women pursuing Lipitor lawsuits against Pfizer in courthouses around the country. Many of the complaints have alleged that Lipitor has sparked a nationwide epidemic of type 2 diabetes among otherwise healthy women.
First approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in December 1996, Lipitor is one of the best-selling drugs in the country, with millions of Americans taking it to help lower their cholesterol and improve their health. Before its patent expired in 2011, Lipitor generated over $125 billion in sales for Pfizer.
Johnson’s Lipitor lawsuit accuses Pfizer of manufacturing and marketing a defective drug, inadequate warnings, and breach of warranty. She is seeking damages for her physical injuries, emotional distress, diminished quality of life, pain and suffering, disability, medical expenses and economic damages.
