What’s the problem?

March 22, 2017 – Per a recent update, there are at least 738 lawsuits pending in the fluoroquinolone multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2642) in Minnesota, the majority of which involve Levaquin. The most recent Status Conference was held on Feb. 21, at which time matters pertaining to bellwether trials were addressed.

Plaintiffs’ attorneys and defense counsel have selected 10 cases for bellwether trials, 8 involving Avelox and 2 involving Cipro. Both sides are conferring on a bellwether trial proposal for 14 other fluoroquinolone lawsuits currently pending in Pennsylvania’s Court of Common Pleas. The next Status Conference will be held next Thursday at 2:00 p.m.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics like Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox are among the most frequently prescribed medications in the U.S., and are used to treat pneumonia, STDs and other bacterial infections. However, the drugs have been criticized in recent years by many who feel their risks outweigh their benefits.

In May 2016, an FDA Safety Alert warned that fluoroquinolone antibiotics shouldn’t be prescribed for patients with acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) when other treatment options are available. When used in this capacity, the medications have been linked to severe complications affecting the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system.

These side effects can occur simultaneously and may prove permanent in some patients. The black box warning included on the labeling for all systemic fluoroquinolones has since been updated to reflect this information.
