Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has been taking the controversial antibiotic drug Levaquin (generic: levofloxacin) to treat her recent bout of pneumonia, according to medical records issued this week.

What’s the Problem?
September 16, 2016 – Clinton, who was diagnosed with pneumonia earlier this week, has been prescribed a 10-day supply of Levaquin, according to Forbes. The drug belongs to a class of medications known as fluoroquinolones which are used for the treatment of major infections like pneumonia, anthrax exposure, plague and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) updated the boxed warning on fluoroquinolone antibiotics in July to include information about “disabling and potentially permanent side effects of the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system.” In addition to Levaquin, other fluoroquinolones include:
- Cipro (ciprofloxacin)
- Cipro Extended-Release (ciprofloxacin extended release)
- Avelox (moxifloxacin)
- Ofloxacin (generic brand)
- Factive (gemifloxacin)
Clinton raised concerns when it appeared that she was struggling to walk while leaving a 9/11 ceremony. Some have speculated that this behavior may have been caused by an adverse reaction to a prescription medication rather than pneumonia.
