What’s the Problem?
October 13, 2017 – The most recent case of Legionnaires’ occurred in a guest at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott, according to Spectrum News. The patient reportedly became sick within the last 10 days and is currently in the hospital undergoing treatment for his symptoms.
Health officials also are looking into reports from at least 20 other people who developed an unspecified respiratory illness after staying or working at the hotel over the summer, said John Teel, executive director of the Williamson County and Cities Health District.
“Almost all of the people stayed at the hotel between June and last week,” Tell said.
Additional cases are still possible because the incubation period is up to 12 days and the hotel closed October 4.
Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease, can cause pneumonia and thrive in water that is at least 85°. Five of the hotel guests that contracted the disease had used the heated swimming pool or hot tub, Teel said.
Preliminary test results for 6 water samples taken from SpringHill Suites’ swimming pool and hot tub indicated all of the samples contained DNA of the bacteria that causes the disease, Teel said. The test cannot confirm whether the bacteria found in the samples was alive, he said. Dead bacteria cannot cause infection, he said.
