What’s the Problem?
June 12, 2017 – The guests who developed Legionnaires’ stayed separately in March and April at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, according to CNN.
Legionella, the bacteria that causes the disease, was found in the hot-water system of one of the hotel’s towers after the second illness was reported late last month.
The Rio is disinfecting the system with chlorine and has relocated guests to rooms serviced by different water systems, according to Mark Bergtholdt, Environmental Health Supervisor for the district.
Legionnaires’ is a severe form of pneumonia that develops when people breathe water particles infected with legionella, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Most healthy people who are exposed to legionella don’t get sick; however, those who do typically experience fever, cough, chills or muscle aches. Symptoms usually begin within 2 to 10 days after exposure to the bacteria.
“Guests who stayed at the Rio more than two weeks ago and have not developed symptoms are not at risk for disease,” the health district said in a statement.
