Update: SunSprout Alfalfa Sprouts Recalled Over Salmonella Contamination

SunSprout Enterprises issued a nationwide recall for 2 lots (#4211 and 5211) of raw alfalfa sprouts in 4-ounce clamshells, with best-by dates between 12/10/22 and 12/27/22, due to potential contamination with Salmonella.

The company directly distributed 808 pounds of the recalled alfalfa sprouts to 5 food service and grocery customers in Nebraska, Kansas, and Iowa from late November to early December 2022.

The raw alfalfa sprouts are packaged in 4-ounce clamshells with best buy dates between 12/10/2022 and 12/27/2022 and lot codes #4211 and 5211. The lot code and Best Buy date can be found on the front of the package.

If you purchased any alfalfa sprouts affected by this recall, you should not eat them and either discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

This recall began on December 29, 2022.

What’s the problem?

January 20, 2012 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release [1] today announcing that Leasa Industries Co., Inc. of Miami, FL., is now recalling the following products because they may be contaminated with salmonella:

  • 433 cases of LEASA Living Alfalfa Sprouts with the use-by date 7/2/12 and UPC code 75465-55912

The UPC code on the affected sprouts is located on the side of the label at the side of the container. The package’s expiration date is located on the side of the container.

Consumers who have purchased any of the sprouts in question should throw them away in a trash receptacle as a precautionary measure. Anyone concerned about a salmonella food poisoning illness should contact their healthcare provider. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
