What’s the problem?
June 14, 2012 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a press release today announcing that Kolcraft Enterprises Inc. is now recalling the following products because of fingertip amputation and laceration hazards:
- Kolcraft Contours Options three- and four-wheeled strollers – model numbers starting with ZL002, ZL005, ZL008, ZL015 and ZL018
On the ZL002 model, the model number and date of manufacture are printed on a sticker above the left wheel. On all the rest of the models, the model number and date of manufacture is printed on a label sewn into the edge of the back of the stroller pad. These products were manufactured in China between January 2006 and November 2009, and sold in a number of different color schemes.
These strollers are being recalled because a child or adult’s finger can become caught in the opening formed when locking and unlocking the hinge mechanism which is used to adjust the handlebars. This presents a serious amputation and laceration hazard to children and adults handling the stroller.
As of the date of the recall, Kolcraft and the CPSC have received at least five reports of injuries involving the hinge, which included:
- three children whose fingertips were amputated;
- two adults whose fingertips were either smashed or lacerated.
The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using Kolcraft strollers included in this recall immediately, and to contact the company to receive a free repair kit.
