San Fernando, CA-based Karoun Dairies has announced a recall of several cheese products distributed across the United States due to their association with a minimum of 24 listeria cases, one of which was fatal.

What’s the problem?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [1] is collaborating with public health officials to investigate a multi-state outbreak of listeria monocytogenes linked to soft cheeses distributed by Karoun Dairies. The defendants argued that they took necessary precautions, but investigations are ongoing.
At least 24 people in 9 states have been infected since August 8, 2010. Of these:
- 22 people were hospitalized
- 5 illnesses were pregnancy related, 1 of which resulted in a fetal loss.
- 1 death was reported in Ohio
- Other illnesses occurred in California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Tennessee and Washington

Which Brands are Affected by the Cheese Recall?
Nearly two-thirds of those sickened are of Middle Eastern or Eastern European descent, or shopped at Middle Eastern-style markets, according to the CDC. 19 ill people with available information reported eating soft cheese within a month of getting sick. 4 of 7 ill people who specified a brand of cheese reported brands distributed by Karoun. No other brand was reported more than once.
As a result of the outbreak, Karoun Dairies has stopped production and issued a nationwide recall for cheeses sold under the following brand names: Karoun, Arz, Gopi, Queso Del Valle, Central Valley Creamery, and Yanni. In response to this, defendant’s motion for dismissal has been filed but not yet granted.
