According to CBS News, in April 2015, Arturo Vargas pleaded no contest to 2 counts of felony sexual battery involving a pair of patients [1]. A jury earlier convicted Vargas, 44, of 2 counts of felony sexual exploitation by a physician. Vargas was sentenced to 5 years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Vargas’ plea came during a pretrial conference before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Curtis Rappe. Deputy District Attorney Martha Carrillo prosecuted the case.

What’s the problem?

January 9, 2012 – A Montebello physician has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female patient during a routine examination at Kaiser Permanente in July. Dr. Arturo Vargas, 41, was booked into jail on suspicion of three serious felony sex crimes. The arrest came following a six month investigation after a patient who was examined by Vargas reported being assaulted by the doctor.

According to Montebello Police, Dr. Vargas is scheduled to be arraigned in East Los Angeles Superior Court on February 6 on charges of sexual battery by fraud, sexual exploitation by a physician, and sexual penetration by a foreign object.

We received a report from a woman in her 30s that during a routine medical examination, she was assaulted by a physician, Montebello police Lt. Luis Lopez said.

The alleged victim reported the incident immediately after it took place. Details about what type of examination the woman was there for, and when the assault took place, have not been made public.

We have placed the physician on administrative leave pending any additional information that we may learn from the legal process, Del Haro said. We have compassion and sympathy for any patient who may believe that he or she has not been treated appropriately, and we investigate all allegations of improper treatment. In cooperation with the police, we will take all appropriate action to ensure continued high-quality care and patient safety.

Vargas has reportedly worked for Kaiser since 2005 and has been placed on leave from his position pending the results of the investigation. Kaiser spokeswoman Reyna Del Haro said the hospital is taking the allegations very seriously.
