What’s the Problem?
April 28, 2015 – Listeria was found in the company’s production plant and ice cream products last week, according to a press release issued by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams CEO John Lowe. As a result of the discovery, the ice cream maker recalled all of its products from retailers and closed its scoop shops.
265 tons of ice cream is enough to fill 15 semi-truck trailers, and will cost the company more than $2.5 million to dispose of, according to Lowe.
Another ice cream maker, Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries, recalled all of its products last week after some half gallons of ice cream were found to contain listeria. The company closed plants in 3 states for cleaning after the bacteria was discovered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In that recall, 10 people — including 3 who died in Kansas — were diagnosed with listeria infections after eating Blue Bell ice cream products.
What is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause severe foodborne illness, although it typically does not affect otherwise healthy adults. However, it can pose serious health problems for pregnant women and their babies, elderly people and individuals with compromised immune systems. Only a small percentage of people who ingest listeria bacteria become ill or develop symptoms; however, for those who do, the resulting illness can be quite severe.
On the mild end of the spectrum, symptoms of listeria infection may include:
- Severe headache
Severe forms of listeriosis can cause:
- Septic shock
Infection during pregnancy can result in:
- Premature labor
- Infection of the newborn
- Neonatal death
