Call your doctor right away if you are a Janumet user who is experiencing any of these side effects. Even if you are not experiencing any of the side effects listed above, consult your doctor if you develop any unexplained complications that are out of the ordinary. While it may not be a Janumet side effect, your doctor should be able to identify and treat the issue.
In 2009, the FDA announced that it was requiring warning labels of Janumet to be updated to include information about the risk of pancreatitis. The administration advised doctors to monitor patients after prescribing Janumet, as well as after increasing dosages of the drug. The updated labeling states that Janumet hasn’t been well studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis, so doctors should be extra cautious about prescribing it to people with preexisting conditions. At the time of the warning, at least 88 cases of acute pancreatitis – including two cases of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis – were reported to the FDA.
Janumet and Pregnancy
Janumet is currently classified in Pregnancy Category B, which means that it is not expected to harm babies in the womb. However, be sure to call your doctor right away if you become pregnant while using Janumet. It is not known whether Janumet has the ability to pass into breast milk, and whether it could affect a nursing baby. As well, Janumet should not be taken by minors under the age of 18 without a physician’s recommendation.
