What’s the Problem?
First approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007, Janumet belongs to a controversial class of diabetes drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors which are designed to help the body manage blood sugar levels. The medication increases insulin made by the pancreas when blood sugars are high, and decreases sugar made by the liver after eating, when the body doesn’t require as much. Janumet is taken daily, and is available in 25, 50, and 100 mg. doses.1
Janumet Side Effects
Despite being well-received at the time it was approved by the FDA in 2007, Janumet has been linked to a number of serious side effects. A Janumet Lawyer may be available to diabetic patients who suffered from one or more of the following side effects:
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Thyroid Cancer
- Acute Pancreatitis
- Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis
- Necrotizing Pancreatitis
Pancreatic Cancer Overview
Pancreatic cancer is a disease of the pancreas, a large organ that manufactures and releases enzymes into the intestines that help the body process nutrients. The condition begins when cells grow abnormally in the pancreas. Rather than developing into healthy pancreas tissue, these cells continue multiplying and form tumors that harm the pancreas. Signs and symptoms of Janumet pancreatic cancer may include:
- Dark urine
- Clay colored stools
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Pain or discomfort in the abdomen
- Back pain
- Blood clots

Thyroid cancer occurs in the thyroid gland, an organ that manufactures hormones which regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and other critical bodily functions. The disease is tricky to diagnose because it hardly ever causes any recognizable signs or symptoms in its early stages. When thyroid cancer finally does cause symptoms, the disease may have traveled to other parts of the body or advanced to an untreatable stage. Janumet thyroid cancer symptoms may include:
- Lumps or nodules that can be felt in the neck
- Changes to the patient’s voice, including increasing hoarseness
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Pain in the neck and/or throat
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
- Enlargement of the thyroid gland

Pancreatitis occurs when normally inert pancreatic digestive enzymes become active within the pancreas and attack it. The disease can be acute – characterized by a rapid onset and lasting for a period of days or weeks – or it can be chronic, developing over months or even years. Characteristic symptoms of pancreatitis may include:
- Upper abdominal pain
- Abdominal pain that radiates to your back
- Abdominal pain that feels worse after eating
- Tenderness when touching the abdomen
- Losing weight without trying
- Oily, smelly stools (steatorrhea)
