What’s the Problem?

July 26, 2016 – Health Canada has received at least 121 reports of adverse health complications linked to IVC filters since June 6, 2016, according to the warning. Most of these complications were reported in patients whose filters had been left implanted for more than 30 days.

Designed to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients who are unable to take anticoagulant medications, IVC filters may do more harm than good. When left implanted in patients for longer than intended, the devices can migrate from the implant site to other parts of the body, or shatter and send metal fragments through the vein leading to the heart. This can result in serious, potentially life-threatening injury which may require additional surgery and, in severe cases, may result in death. Removing IVC filters has proven to be difficult if not impossible in many cases.

Which Products are Affected?

Health Canada identifies the following affected products:
A.L.N.

  • ALN Vena Cava Filter

Bard Peripheral Vascular

B. Braun Medical

Cordis Cashel

REX Medical, LP

  • Option Retrievable Vena Cava Filter System

William Cook, Europe APS and Cook, Inc.

Recommendations

Health Canada reminds physicians that vena cava filters are intended for short-term use and that, when possible, they should be removed as soon as the blood clot risk has passed. Hospitals are encouraged to identify all patients who have been implanted a retrievable IVC filter so that a formal strategy for filter removal can be formulated.
