IVC Filter Complications

Recent studies have determined that inferior vena cava (IVC) filter complications can include migration, organ perforation, hemorrhages, blood clots, respiratory compromise, and death. These injuries occur when the filters fragment and embolize in the body, resulting in a life-threatening situation that requires immediate medical attention. Since they first hit the market, IVC filters made by C.R. Bard and other companies have been linked to more than 1,000 injury reports submitted to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

IVC Filter Overview

IVC filters are small, umbrella-shaped devices designed to be implanted in people at risk for blood clots who are unable to take anticoagulant drugs. They work as a kind of safety net that is placed inside the inferior vena cava, a large vein that carries oxygen-depleted (blue) blood into the heart’s right atrium. Once implanted, the IVC filter stops any blood clots before they travel to the lungs to become potentially deadly pulmonary embolisms.

IVC filters are manufactured and marketed by a number of different companies, but two devices made by C.R. Bard – the Recovery and G2 filters – are currently being investigated by the FDA after being linked to numerous adverse health complications. Since they first hit the U.S. market in 2005, Bard IVC filters have been named in approximately 1,000 injury reports submitted to the FDA. Recent studies have revealed that these devices can fracture in the body after being implanted, sending pieces of the filter into the patient’s veins. When this occurs, a number of serious, potentially life-threatening complications can result.

What Complications Can IVC Filters Cause?

IVC filter complications have been reported to include:

  • Fracture of the IVC filter
  • Perforation, Puncture or Serious Damage to the Heart, Lungs or Vena Cava
  • Internal Bleeding
  • Cardiac or Pericardial Tamponade
  • Ventricle Tachycardia
  • Lower Limb DVT
  • Hematoma or Nerve Injury at the Puncture Site
  • Constant and Severe Pain in the Heart, Chest or Elsewhere in the Body
  • Pulmonary Embolism
  • Respiratory Distress
  • Infection
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Death

Due to the large number of complications linked to IVC filters, the FDA is urging physicians to advise potential candidates of the risks prior to implanting the devices, and to remove them once the blood clot risk has subsided. IVC filter lawsuits are being investigated nationwide as a result of manufacturers’ failure to take adequate steps to protect consumers or warn them about the risk of potential health complications associated with the devices. Although information has been available to these companies about the problems with IVC filters for years, they allowed thousands of unsuspecting patients to be implanted with their products, thereby unnecessarily exposing them to a risk of serious injuries and even death.
