What Does Roundup Do to You?
The world's most widely used weed killer, Roundup, has been linked to cancer. According to the World Health Organization and its International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Roundup's main ingredient is a probable human carcinogen.
This ingredient, glyphosate, has been linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and the following cancers:
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
- B-cell lymphoma
- T-cell lymphoma
- Multiple myeloma
Not only does Roundup have a possible link to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but it also is a potential endocrine disruptor. It is hypothesized that exposure to Roundup herbicide can cause various health problems, including other forms of cancer, birth defects, and developmental disorders.
Qualifying for a Lawsuit
For Iowa residents to be successful in pursuing a lawsuit or settlement claim against Monsanto, you must be able to demonstrate several things.
First, you have to show that you were exposed to Roundup and that your exposure was a significant factor in causing your cancer. You will need to have medical records documenting your diagnosis, as well as records of your exposure to Roundup weed killer.
This can include notes of where and when you used Roundup and any other glyphosate-based herbicides. If you worked with Roundup weed killer, you might also have a history of your exposure through work.
Farm workers and landscapers may have access to records about their exposure to the Roundup product.
Second, you will need to show that Monsanto knew or should have known about the risks associated with Roundup. There is a growing body of evidence linking glyphosate to developing cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Monsanto has been aware of this evidence for years.
Third, you will need to show that Monsanto failed to warn consumers about the risks associated with its product. Companies must provide consumers with accurate information about the products it sells so that customers can make informed decisions.
Monsanto continues to fight individual lawsuits against those who developed cancer while using Roundup. Despite all the evidence, Monsanto insists its product is safe.
There are a few things you can do to strengthen your Roundup claim:
- Document your exposure to Roundup. Keep a record of when and where you used it and the amount you used.
- Look for glyphosate in your blood or urine. A laboratory can test for the presence of glyphosate in your body.
- Get a medical opinion. A doctor can give an opinion about whether your cancer was caused by exposure to glyphosate.

Statute of Limitations in Iowa
One of the rules that all product liability cases must follow is the statute of limitations. The statute of limitations is a deadline for filing a lawsuit. In Iowa, the statute of limitations for most product liability cases is two years from the date of your personal injury .
If your Roundup cancer diagnosis occurred more than two years ago, you might still be able to file a claim, but it will be more difficult. You will need to show that you could not have reasonably known about your Roundup exposure until recently.
Regardless, if you have been diagnosed with cancer and think Roundup may be to blame, you should contact a lawyer as soon as possible to discuss the legal options for your medical care.
An experienced lawyer can review your case and help you pursue a claim against Monsanto. The lawyers at our firm have considerable expertise in handling product liability cases. We are here to answer your questions and help you navigate this complex process.
How Much Do You Get in Lawsuits?
Damages in a product liability lawsuit come in two forms: compensatory and punitive. Compensatory damages are designed to reimburse the victim for their losses, while punitive damages are intended to deter future misconduct.
In lawsuits, compensatory damages may include items like:
- Medical bills and other medical costs
- Lost wages
- Future earnings
- Pain and suffering
- Loss of enjoyment of life
In some lawsuits, punitive damages may also be available. Punitive damages are not guaranteed in product liability cases but may be imposed if the company acted with gross negligence or malice.
"Thousands of additional lawsuits against Monsanto, which Bayer acquired last year, are queued up in state and federal courts."
- New York Times
It is impossible to predict how much any particular case will get in a lawsuit. However, some recent settlements in similar cases have been significant.
One lawsuit trial resulted in a $289 million verdict for the plaintiff, while another lawsuit resulted in a $2 billion verdict for a couple who had been exposed to this weed killer and gotten non-Hodgkin lymphoma .
The amount of money you will receive will depend on the severity of your injuries and the strength of your lawsuit. Experienced Iowa Roundup lawyers can help you understand what you may be entitled to and guide you through the legal process.
