What treatments and drugs can be used to treat Invega-induced gynecomastia?
Invega gynecomastia treatments and drugs may include:
- Prescription medications – Drugs such as tamoxifen and raloxifene, which are typically prescribed to treat breast cancer, may be helpful for men with gynecomastia. Although these medications are approved by the FDA, they have not been approved to treat gynecomastia. Prescribing them for this purpose is done so is a so-called ‘off-label’ capacity.
- Surgery – If medication is ineffective at treating Invega gynecomastia, surgery may be recommended. Procedures typically implemented include liposuction, where breast fat is removed, or a mastectomy, where the breast gland tissue is removed. Mastectomies are often performed on an endoscopic basis, which is minimally invasive and requires smaller incisions.
- Discontinuing treatment with Invega – If Invega has been determined to be the likely cause of the patient’s gynecomastia, the doctor may recommend discontinuing treatment with the drug in favor of another medication with fewer potential side effects.
In adolescents and young men with no apparent cause of gynecomastia, periodic evaluations may be recommended to see if the condition resolves on its own. Gynecomastia often goes away by itself in two year or less. If, on the other hand, the condition does not improve, medications or surgical intervention may be required.
