Hyundai, Kia Vehicles Recalled for Fire Risk

Hyundai and Kia are recalling 5 models of SUVs and sedans for a combined 168,000 vehicles that were improperly repaired under an earlier recall. The defect at issue is a fuel leak which could increase the risk of a vehicle fire in affected models.

The Center for Auto Safety (CAS), a Washington, D.C.-based consumer watchdog group, filed a petition in June 2018 with the NHTSA to investigate multiple reports of fire associated with the Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

What’s the problem?

The petition filed by CAS focused on an abnormally high number of complaints over 4 vehicles from model years 2011 to 2014: the Kia Optima sedan and Sorento SUV, and the Hyundai Sonata sedan and Santa Fe SUV. To date, at least 6 people have been injured in the vehicle fires, CAS said.

The center also found 120 consumer complaints filed with NHTSA over vehicle fires in those models which occurred without a collision, as well as nearly 230 separate complaints of melted wires in the engine bays, smoke, or burning odors indicating potential fires, CAS said. NHTSA should focus on instances where wiring harnesses interact with fender edges, the center added.

Hyundai said it has a copy of the CAS petition and is in the process of reviewing it, adding that the number of car fires associated with the issue is “extremely low.”

“Hyundai actively evaluates potential safety concerns will all of its vehicles and acts swiftly to recall vehicles with safety-related defects,” the automaker said in response to the developments. “Should we, in close coordination with NHTSA, find that additional remedies in the U.S. are warranted for these vehicles, we will take immediate action.”
