Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,  FDA said. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Where Was the Recalled Cream Cheese Sold?

The recalled products were manufactured at different third-party facilities around the Midwest and are sold under HyVee’s private label and bulk packaging programs. The products were subsequently distributed to Hy-Vee, Hy-Vee Drugstore, and Dollar Fresh Market locations – as well as Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience stores – in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Salmonella Symptoms

According to Cleveland Clinic 2022 research, salmonella, commonly known as salmonellosis, manifests as gastrointestinal distress, including diarrhea and stomach pains, caused by Salmonella bacteria. It ranks as the most prevalent form of bacterial food poisoning in the United States [2]. It’s distinct from other Salmonella-related illnesses like typhoid fever.

When afflicted with salmonella, it signifies that a sufficient quantity of bacteria has surpassed stomach acid and immune defenses, leading to illness. Salmonella bacteria invade and disrupt the intestinal lining cells, hindering water absorption, and resulting in stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Symptoms typically emerge within hours to days following exposure to Salmonella bacteria and primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract, featuring:

  • Diarrhea, occasionally bloody
  • Fever
  • Stomach pains or cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache

Individuals may experience a combination of these symptoms or present with only some.

Salmonella Poisoning Statistics

  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Salmonella is a significant public health concern in the United States, causing an estimated 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths annually.
  • The primary source of these infections is foodborne transmission, with chicken and turkey contributing to over 23% of foodborne Salmonella illnesses, as estimated by the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration.
  • Despite the decreasing trend in Salmonella contamination in poultry, as indicated by testing data from the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), there has been no corresponding decline in human illnesses.
  • Over the past two decades, rates of human illness have remained stagnant, falling short of the national goal of reducing Salmonella illnesses by 25%.
  • These findings underscore the urgency for a fresh approach to controlling Salmonella in poultry to effectively reduce human infections.
