Listeria and salmonella are organisms “that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” FDA said.
Hostess initiated this recall after becoming aware of the problem from its co-manufacturer, Best Harvest Bakeries, through Best Harvest Bakeries’ environmental monitoring program.
If you purchased any of the products listed above, you should not eat them, and either discard them or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
Anyone concerned about a potential food poisoning illness should call their doctor immediately.
Listeria Symptoms
There are a wide range of symptoms for listeria food poisoning (listeriosis). Depending on the severity of illness, the symptoms may persist for a few days to several weeks. Mild symptoms typically include varying degrees of fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
If the more severe form of listeria food poisoning develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. For children, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems, listeriosis can result in death.
Salmonella Symptoms
Most people with salmonella food poisoning (salmonellosis) suffer from diarrhea (that can be bloody), fever, and stomach cramps. Certain individuals may also experience nausea, vomiting, or a headache. Symptoms typically begin within 6 hours to 6 days after infection and last 4 days up to 1 week.
