Update: Honda African Twin Recalled for Stall, Loss of Drive Power Hazard
In December 2022, Honda issued a nationwide recall for approximately 1,561 Africa Twin Africa Twin dual-clutch transmission (DCT) models from years 2020-2021 due to a problem with the engine control unit (ECU).
Specifically, the onboard diagnostics data management of the ECU was improperly programmed in affected models, producing abnormal data. This error can reset the ECU, causing the Controller Area Network (CAN) communication to disconnect and the clutch to be released, which can cause an engine stall or a loss of drive power.
Honda initiated the recall after the company received several reports of engines stalling in Japan, Italy, and Germany. While investigating, Honda also received 2 warranty claims in the U.S. market due to the same problem. Honda confirmed there was a software error that can cause sudden stalling in certain production models, prompting the company to conduct a safety recall for the units identified with the problem.

What’s the Problem?
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects:
- 2018-2019 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports (CRF1000L)
- 2020 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports (CRF1100L)
“Contaminants inside the fuel tank may cause the fuel filter to clog, possibly resulting in an engine stall,” NHTSA said. “An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash or injury.”
Honda is notifying owners and dealers will drain and clean the fuel tank, and replace the fuel filter assembly, free of charge.
This recall began on February 15, 2021.

Can I join a class action lawsuit if I experienced defects in my Honda Africa Twin?
Yes, if there is an existing class action lawsuit related to the specific defect you experienced in your Honda Africa Twin, you may be eligible to join the lawsuit. Participation in a class action can help you recover damages without the need for a separate, individual lawsuit.
