DePuy Orthopedics has announced that its ASR hip will be phased out this year, and it appears that the risk of problems with the device was known for at least two years prior to this. Product liability lawsuits are currently being reviewed throughout the country.
DePuy Hip Update 1/23/13: Newly disclosed court documents have revealed that a 2011 internal investigation conducted by Johnson & Johnson on its much-troubled DePuy ASR hip implant estimated that the device would fail within five years in nearly 40% of recipients. For reasons still unclear, the company failed to make this information public while simultaneously downplaying the potential health complications associated with its metal-on-metal hip. What’s the problem?
Shortly after the DePuy ASR resurfacing system was introduced, the company began receiving a number of complaints of problems and complications associated with early failure of the metal hip implants. The hip replacement can fail within only a few years of surgery, causing pain and leading to complicated and expensive replacement surgery.
Adverse event reports increased sharply between 2006 and 2009, with nearly 100 reports in 2007, over 200 in 2008, and over 300 in 2009. Most of the DePuy ASR complications involve situations where individuals require additional surgery to replace the defective hip implants.
It now appears that the complications with the DePuy ASR hip may be linked to defects in the design of the hip implant. Orthopedic experts have suggested that the component has a narrow window for proper placement, which could explain the higher-than-expected failure rate when compared with other types of hip replacement implants.
Individuals with a small stature, such as women and those with weak bones, may be more susceptible to failure of DePuy ASR hip implants. However, potential lawsuits are being pursued for all individuals who have experienced complications after their hip surgery.
