What’s the Problem?

This recall affects 2019-2020 High Altitude XT50 trailers retrofitted with a black rear swing arm spare tire carrier, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The weld on the retrofitted rear swing arm bracket of affected travel trailers may fail causing the rear swing arm, spare tire, and any other attached items to break away from the trailer frame, NHTSA said. If the rear swing arm spare tire carrier bracket weld fails, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

High Altitude Trailer Co. is notifying owners and dealers will add reinforcing welds along the top seam of the swing arm bracket and trailer frame, free of charge.

This recall began on July 28, 2020.

Why Do Travel Trailers Have So Many Problems?

You typically hear about travel trailers having so many issues because all recreational vehicles have similar problems. Travel trailers have sensitive systems that require routine maintenance, so if you don’t stay up to date, there’s a high likelihood that you’ll have a problem sooner or later.

Many owners fail to keep up with the recommended maintenance on their travel trailers. Some may even misuse them, which increases wear and tear and shortens the life of some of the sensitive components on their vehicle.

It’s also no secret that manufacturers may not always use the highest quality materials. Combine that with the fact that many of these companies tend to focus on producing travel trailers as quickly as possible, and you’re bound to have problems that the factory may have overlooked. These may pop up the more you tow an RV over roads with many bumps and potholes.
