What’s the Problem?
July 5, 2017 – For the study, which was published Monday in the BMJ, a research team led by Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ health system in St. Louis looked at the prescription records of millions of U.S. military veterans over the course of nearly 6 years.
They found that prolonged PPI use was associated with a 25% greater risk of death compared to patients who took H2 blockers, another class of heartburn medication. H2 blockers are sold under the brand names Pepcid, Tagamet and Zantac. PPIs include:
- Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium)
- Aciphex (rabeprazole)
- Protonix (pantoprazole)
- Prevacid (lansoprazole)
- Zegerid (omeprazole / sodium bicarbonate)
- Dexilant (dexlansoprazole)
- Prilosec (omeprazole)
- Vimovo (esomeprazole and naproxen)
The study also found that PPI use was linked to a 15% increased death rate compared to patients who took another kind of acid suppressor other than H2 blockers. Additionally, the death rate was 23% higher among PPI users compared to people who took no such medications, according to the study.
The researchers concluded that PPIs should only be prescribed when there’s a legitimate reason, and only long enough to provide benefits that outweigh the risks. The increased mortality associated with the heartburn medications was proportionately connected to their duration of use.
In addition to the increased risk of death, proton pump inhibitors have been linked to serious side effects including kidney disease, dementia and infection by the antibiotic-resistant superbug C. difficile.
