Rolling Chair Hazards
When you think about potential workplace safety hazards, a rolling chair is likely not among the first things that comes to mind. However, rolling chair accidents do, in fact, occur, and with surprising regularity.
These types of injuries occur when a chair rolls away from a person as they do things like lean over to pick something up off the floor, or when they move to reach for something on their workstation. Injuries related to rolling chairs tend to be most common among people who work in healthcare, clerical positions, in education, in hospitality, in manufacturing, and in retail.
An important part of using a rolling chair safely involves user behavior. Doing things like standing on a rolling chair or leaning too far forward are not recommended.
However, not all rolling chair injuries are caused by human actions. Chairs easily slide away from people on slippery floors. Chairs can also tip over if they’re placed on a hard floor surface near a carpeted area, and wheels get stuck as they move over the different surfaces.
Many rolling chairs are not as stable as they should be. The U.S. Occupational safety Hazard Association (OSHA) specifically advises that desk chairs have 5 legs instead of 4 because chairs with 4 legs are more prone to tipping over.
