What’s the Problem?
This recall affects 6 oz and 8 oz Green Sprouts Stainless Steel cups and bottles with tracking numbers 29218V06985, 35719V06985, and 33020V06985, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission [1].
“The recalled stainless-steel bottles and cups bottom base can break off, exposing a solder dot that contains lead, posing a lead poisoning hazard to the child,” CPSC said. “Lead is toxic if ingested by young children, and can cause adverse health effects. The firm has received seven reports of incidents of the bottles’ base breaking off exposing the solder dot.”
The recalled bottles were sold in aqua, pink, green, and navy colors. The tracking number is printed on the bottom base, CPSC said.
Affected Green Sprouts Stainless Steel Straw Bottles, Sippy Cups and Sip & Straw Cups were sold online and at Buy Buy Baby and Whole Foods stores nationwide from January 2020 through September 2022 for between $14 and $19.
If you purchased a sippy cup that is affected by this recall, you should take it away from children and contact Green Sprouts for a full refund in the form of store credit or your money back.
This recall began on November 23, 2022.
Childhood Lead Poisoning Risk
Children under the age of 6 are at greatest risk for health problems caused by lead exposure, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The health effects of lead exposure are more harmful to young children because their bodies are still developing, and they are growing rapidly. Young children also tend to put their hands or other contaminated objects into their mouths.
Children can be exposed to lead from many sources, including:
- Paint in homes built before 1978 that is chipping or deteriorating.
- Soil near older buildings, airports, or busy roads.
- Drinking water delivered through lead pipes, faucets, and plumbing fixtures.
- Consumer products including toys, jewelry, antiques, and collectible items.
- Certain foods, cosmetics, and traditional medications imported from overseas.
- Jobs that involve working with lead-based products which might cause parents to bring lead into the home.
