A Dearborn, Michigan establishment is now recalling two different types of cheeses because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Michigan health officials are investigating two recent cases of human listeriosis that may be connected to this recall. Consumers who have purchased Green Cedar Dairy cheese included in this recall should discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

What’s the problem?
- All Natural Ackawi Cheese
- All Natural Chives Cheese
These items are sold in 12-14 oz. squares vacuum sealed in clear plastic packages with a sell by date up to July 1, 2012, and can be identified by labels that read Green Cedar Dairy (Plant #26941), All Natural Ackawi and All Natural Chives Cheese. The sell by date is marked on a label on the back of the cheese. These products were distributed to retail outlets and bakeries in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
The Michigan Department of Community Health and the Wayne County Public Health Department are currently investigating at least two cases of listeria food poisoning (listeriosis) that may be connected to Green Cedar Dairy cheese. State health officials identified Listeria monocytogenes during routine sampling of All Natural Chives Cheese collected from the dairy.
This is a consumer level recall. If you have purchased any cheese included in this recall, you should discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase. Green Cedar Dairy is requesting that all establishments selling recalled cheese products stop doing so immediately, and that restaurants cease serving them.
Listeria Food Poisoning (Listeriosis)
Listeria monocytogenes is a common foodborne pathogen that can cause potentially fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with compromised immune systems. Signs and symptoms of listeria food poisoning may include (but are not limited to):
- high fever
- severe headache
- abdominal pain
- diarrhea (which may be bloody)
- miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women
