Graco Rockers Recalled Over Suffocation Risk

Jan. 30, 2020 - The Graco Little Lounger Rocking Seat is a rocking seat and vibrating lounger that sold online and at Target, Babies R Us, and other stores nationwide from 2013 to 2018 for about $80, CPSC said. Model numbers affected by the recall include 1872034, 1875063, 1875102, 1877160, 1882081, 1896313, 1908957, 1914283, 2047734, and 1922809 (model number located on metal leg of rocker).

To date, no injuries or fatalities have been linked to the Graco Little Lounger Rocking Seat; however, similarly inclined baby sleepers such as Rock 'n' Play baby sleepers from Fisher-Price have been linked to at least 73 infant fatalities and more than 1,000 incidents, including serious injuries. In October 2019, CPSC warned consumers not to use any infant-inclined [1] sleep products and proposed banning all such sleepers from the U.S. market.

If you purchased a Graco Rocker that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately, and contact Graco for information about a cash refund or voucher, CPSC said.

CPSC Recommends New Safety Rules for Infant Rockers

In September 2023, staff members at the CPSC recommended new safety rules for infant rockers [1.], saying the products were linked to at least 11 deaths between 2011 and 2022, most of which occurred while babies were sleeping. Among the new rules:

  • Rockers should be firmer and flatter to prevent infants from suffocating.
  • Rockers must pass stability and other safety tests and seek to prevent strangulation from hanging straps.
  • Prominent warning labels should be affixed to rockers emphasizing the hazards associated with their use, urging caregivers not to allow babies to sleep in them or put soft bedding in them.

“We have to make these as foolproof as possible — you need to make it so that it’s almost impossible to use in an unsafe way,” said Dr. Rachel Moon, who leads the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome task force for the American Academy of Pediatrics.
