What is GNC Men’s Prostate Formula?

GNC Men’s Prostate Formula is a dietary supplement intended to help with normal prostate function and healthy urinary flow. The drug contains saw palmetto berry extract, which has been traditionally eaten by Native Americans as food and for medicinal purposes.

What’s the Problem?

Dietary supplements like GNC Men’s Prostate Formula are not regulated by the FDA the same way prescription medications are. Supplement makers are not required to prove to federal regulators that their products are safe, that they’re effective, or that they’re accurately labeled.

The Placebo Effect

In one study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2011, researchers gave 369 men suffering from symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — also known as prostate gland enlargement — either a placebo or doses of saw palmetto extract (the active ingredient in GNC Men’s Prostate Formula). They tracked their symptoms for up to 72 weeks and concluded that the extract was no better than a placebo at alleviating symptoms. Several similar studies have also reached the same conclusion, and a review by the independent Cochrane Collaboration of studies involving a total of 5,666 men found this lack of efficacy, as well.

Class Action Alleges GNC Supplements Deceptively Labeled

A class action lawsuit recently filed in the Northern District of California alleges that FDA disclaimers are hidden or not present on GNC Men’s Prostate Formula and other supplements sold by the company. These mandatory disclaimers are intended to warn consumers that the supplements are “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.” Failure to include these warnings make the nutritional supplements drugs, specifically non-FDA approved drugs, according to the class action.
