What’s the Problem?
August 24, 2016 – The new rules came into force Monday, nearly 2 months after the European Commission failed to reach consensus on the reauthorizing of glyphosate in the EU, according to AgriLand. Under the new regulations, there is a ban of a co-formulant called polyethoxylated tallow amine (POEA) from glyphosate-containing products.
POEA, a surfactant that enhances the activity of herbicides, has raised concerns regarding its toxicity to humans when used in plant protection chemicals that contain glyphosate.
Other regulations include greater scrutiny on the pre-harvest use of glyphosate, in addition to the reduction of its use in specific areas such as public parks, playgrounds and sports grounds.
The new restrictions will apply for the duration of the 18-month extension on glyphosate in the EU, until the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) can issue its opinion on the weedkiller.
