Gianvi (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol), a generic form of Bayer’s blockbuster birth control pill Yaz, has recently been linked to pulmonary embolisms and other serious side effects in certain high risk users. Like Yaz, Gianvi contains a fourth-generation synthetic hormone known as drospirenone, a substance that has been increasingly linked to numerous adverse complications. Signs and symptoms of a Gianvi-induced pulmonary embolism may include chest pain, coughing up blood, and shortness of breath that occurs suddenly and without warning.

What’s the problem with Gianvi?
Drospirenone, the new synthetic hormone found in Gianvi, has been found to have the potential to cause hyperkalemia, a condition characterized by excessive amounts of potassium in the blood. Hyperkalemia may, in turn, lead to pulmonary embolisms and other potentially-fatal heart and lung problems. Women who use Gianvi or other birth control products containing drospirenone should undergo regular blood testing to monitor their potassium levels.
Gianvi Pulmonary Embolisms
A pulmonary embolism occurs when blood is unable to travel through the lungs due to a blood clot in an artery that has traveled from elsewhere in the body through the bloodstream. As a result, lung function is severely compromised and a number of telltale symptoms are experienced, which may include:
- coughing up blood
- chest pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, neck or jaw
- rapid heartbeat
- shortness of breath that occurs suddenly and without warning
- bluish colored or clammy skin
- excessive sweating
- light headedness
- leg swelling
- weak pulse
Treatment & Outlook (Prognosis)
Treatment for pulmonary embolisms typically involves attempting to dissolve the clot, a process known as thrombolytic therapy. Clot-dissolving drugs include:
- T-plasminogen activator (t-PA)
Additionally, blood thinners may also be given to prevent clots. This is called anticoagulation therapy. Commonly-used blood thinners include:
Unfortunately, even with prompt medical treatment, about a third of those who experience a Gianvi-induced pulmonary embolism will not survive the event. Those who do live may suffer from lifelong heart damage and pulmonary hypertension.
