What’s the Problem?
August 17, 2016 – According to the lawsuit (PDF), Plaintiff Brant Mauk was sickened with flu-like symptoms characteristic of Hepatitis A in late June after eating at Genki Sushi. Mauk was hospitalized and tests confirmed the disease; he was given a vaccine and sent home on July 7, but was hospitalized again the same day for worsening symptoms. In total, Mauk spent a week in the hospital and is still recovering.
Tracking the hepatitis outbreak has proved difficult as the number of victims increases, but the Hawaii Department of Health (HDOH) has identified the culprit as raw scallops sold at Genki Sushi locations on Oahu and Kauai.
Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water, or through direct contact with an infectious person, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Almost everyone recovers fully from the disease with a lifelong immunity; however, a small proportion of people infected may die from fulminant hepatitis. A safe food and water supply, improved sanitation, handwashing, and the hepatitis A vaccine are the most effective ways to combat the disease.
