Over the past several years, generic versions of the controversial birth control pill Yasmin including Ocella, Syeda and Zarah have been linked to a number of serious, potentially life-threatening side effects. Adverse events associated with these contraceptives include blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, gallbladder injuries, pancreatitis and death. Since 2004, there have been over 50 deaths associated with Yasmin products reported to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

What is Generic Yasmin?

The generic versions of Yasmin – Ocella, Syeda, and Zarah – work by overriding the user’s menstrual cycle. In a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, levels of the sex hormones change throughout each month. The hormones cause an egg to be released from the ovaries, and prepare the lining of the womb for a possible pregnancy. At the end of the cycle, if the egg has not been fertilized, the levels of the hormones fall, causing the womb lining to be shed as a monthly period.

The daily dose of generic Yasmin works by tricking the body into thinking that ovulation has already occurred. This prevents an egg from ripening and being released from the ovaries each month. Unfortunately, the drospirenone contained in generic Yasmin has recently been linked to a high number of extremely serious health complications.

Generic Yasmin Side Effects

Generic versions of Yasmin and other birth control pills containing drospirenone have been increasingly associated with the following serious side effects:

  • Blood Clots
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Stroke
  • Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA)
  • Heart Attack
  • Myocardial Infarction
  • Gallbladder Disease / Injury (cholecystitis)
  • Gallbladder Removal (cholecystectomy)
  • Death

Generic Yasmin Blood Clots

On April 10, 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release indicating that it had completed a comprehensive analysis of several epidemiological studies evaluating the risk of blood clots in women taking birth control pills containing drospirenone. After reviewing the studies, the administration determined that drospirenone contraceptives may be linked to an increased risk of blood clots compared to birth control pills containing levonorgestrel, a different hormone found in many older forms of birth control. Signs and symptoms of a generic Yasmin-induced blood clot depend on where the anomaly originates, and may include:

  • Swelling or pain in the arms/legs
  • Redness or discoloration
  • Arms/legs feeling warm
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Parts of the body turn blue (i.e. lips, skin)
  • Fever
  • Coughing up blood
  • Increased heart rate
  • Low blood pressure

Generic Yasmin Heart Attack

Generic Yasmin-induced heart attacks typically occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood through a coronary artery – a vessel that delivers blood to the heart muscle. If left untreated, obstructed blood flow to the heart can result in damaged or destroyed coronary tissue. Unfortunately, these types of heart attacks have the potential to be fatal. This is often because patients tend to confuse their symptoms with a minor illness, like indigestion, and delay seeking treatment. Signs and symptoms of a generic Yasmin heart attack may include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Upper body pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Anxiety
  • Lightheadedness
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Clammy skin
  • Unusual or unexplained fatigue

Generic Yasmin Gallbladder Disease

The gallbladder is a sac located under the liver that stores and concentrates bile. Bile aids in the digestion of fats, and is released by the gallbladder into the upper small intestine in response to food. Anything that slows or otherwise obstructs the flow of bile out of the gallbladder may subsequently result in gallbladder disease. The drospirenone contained in generic Yasmin may increase cholesterol levels in the bile and decrease gallbladder movement, which can create gallstones that lead to serious problems if they become trapped in the bile ducts. Signs and symptoms of gallbladder disease may include:

  • Steady, severe pain in the upper abdomen that increases rapidly and lasts from 30 minutes to several hours
  • Pain in the back between the shoulder blades
  • Pain under the right shoulder
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Recurring intolerance of fatty foods
  • Colicb
  • Belching
  • Gas
  • Indigestion
