What’s the problem?
October 6, 2011 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that Fruit Fresh Up, Inc. of Depew, New York, is currently recalling approximately 4,800 individual packages of the following products because they may be tainted with Listeria monocytogenes:
- Cantaloupe Chunks
- Cantaloupe Slices
- Gourmet Fruit Salad
- Small Fruit Salad
- Small and Large Fruit Salad with Pineapple
- Fruit Salad with Kiwi
- Fruit Trays
These products were acquired from an independent wholesaler and distributed to Buffalo, New York and surrounding areas between August 31 and September 11 in retail stores and through catering orders. According to the company, Fresh Fruit Up, Inc. was not advised of the potential listeria contamination until Thursday, September 27th.
This action is part of a massive recall involving Rocky Ford cantaloupes produced by Jensen Farms in Holly, Colorado. The FDA has confirmed that Listeria monocytogenes was found in samples taken from a Denver area retailer and the Jensen Farms packing facility. The cantaloupes were distributed to at least 17 different U.S. states between July 29th and September 10th. To date, there have been a total of at least 96 illnesses – including 18 deaths – linked to contaminated melons sold by Jensen Farms. The company issued a nationwide recall of its cantaloupes after news of the listeria outbreak, and has ceased production of the product while the FDA determines the source of the problem.
