Protect Your Baby & Yourself from Listeriosis
According to the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), Pregnant women are at a particularly high risk for contracting listeriosis after consuming contaminated food products. Listeriosis can cause miscarriage, premature delivery, serious sickness, and even death. If you are pregnant, you need to know how to protect your baby and yourself from listeria food poisoning. In order to effectively fight bacteria, follow these four simple steps:
- Clean: Wash hands often with soap and warm water. Always be sure to use clean utensils. Wash countertops with hot soapy water and clean up spills immediately.
- Separate: Keep raw meat, fish and poultry away from other food that will not be cooked.
- Cook: Cook food to a safe internal temperature, and always be sure to check with a food thermometer.
- Chill: Refrigerate or freeze within two hours (one hour in hot weather). Don’t leave fish, meat, poultry, or cooked food sitting out.
