Fosavance Lawsuit

Our Fosavance lawyers are now investigating lawsuits on behalf of patients who have experienced femur fractures and other serious injuries after taking Fosavance, a drug prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis. If you took Fosavance for an extended period of time and suffered from a femur fracture or other bone injury, please contact us for a free case evaluation.

Fosavance Update 6/28/12: In a new web guide published by the FDA, the administration lays out new guidance for the use of bisphosphonates, tentatively recommending a three to five year time limit for the drugs, at least until more conclusive data becomes available. The five-year time limit was originally suggested in a September 2011 report issued by the FDA, which concluded that there appears to be no tangible benefit to extending bisphosphonate regimens beyond five years. Fosavance Bone Fracture Update 5/24/12: In a study published this week by the Archives of Internal Medicine, Swiss researchers reached conclusions similar to those reached earlier this month by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) – that taking osteoporosis drugs from the bisphosphonate class can increase the risk of atypical bone fractures. Taken cumulatively, the results of the study seem to suggest that the risk of fractures increased over time while the benefits of the drugs decreased. Click here to learn more.

What’s the problem?

Fosavance (alendronic acid, colecalciferol) is a bisphosphonate medication prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis. In menopausal women, estrogen levels in the blood start to decrease, which leads to a loss of bone density. Rapid bone deterioration may lead to the development of osteoporosis, a condition in which the bones brittle and become prone to fractures and breaks. Fosavance works by binding to the bone and preventing calcium from being removed, which helps keep the bones strong and less likely to break. Unfortunately, bisphosphonates like Fosavance have been linked to a variety of catastrophic side effects in users taking the medications for an extended period of time.

In October 2010, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that bisphosphonates like Fosavance had been linked to two rare types of thigh fractures known as subtrochanteric and diaphyseal femur fractures. The FDA said in its alert that these unusual femur fractures have been most often reported in patients taking bisphosphonates, and that these injuries may be related to the long-term use of these drugs.

Fosavance Side Effects

There are a variety of side effects associated with Fosavance. Our firm is pursing the following types of severe side effects:

  • Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (Dead Jaw)
  • Atypical femur fractures
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Pain
  • Swelling or infection of the gums
  • Loosening of the teeth
  • Poor healing of the gums
  • Numbness or a feeling of heaviness in the jaw
  • Drainage
  • Exposed bone
  • Hip Fractures

Fosavance & Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ)

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a disease in which bone tissue in the jaw does not heal correctly. The onset of ONJ is linked with the temporary or permanent loss of blood to bone tissue, leading to death of the tissue and the eventual collapse of the bone. Common ONJ symptoms can include (but are not limited to):

  • Loose teeth
  • Exposed bone
  • Jaw / gum pain
  • Jaw / gum swelling
  • Jaw / gum infection
  • Jaw numbness
  • Loss of sensation
  • Dramatic gum loss

Over the past several years, scores of lawsuits have been filed against bisphosphonate manufacturers claiming that, instead of increasing bone density and strengthening bones, these medications can actually cause deterioration of the jaw bone and contribute to femur fractures.

Bisphosphonate Osteoporosis Drugs

In addition to Fosavance, bisphosphonate drugs include:
