A Georgia man has filed a product liability lawsuit against the makers of Fortesta, a popular testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) supplement. The complaint alleges that the plaintiff had a heart attack after using Fortesta, which is prescribed for the treatment of low testosterone levels, a condition commonly referred to as “Low T.” The new case is the latest in a growing number of lawsuits filed in recent months over cardiovascular complications allegedly caused by testosterone boosters.

What’s the Problem?
The new Fortesta Heart Attack Lawsuit was filed by Demetric Taylor in Philadelphia against ProStrakan, the company that makes the product. The complaint alleges that ProStrakan failed to warn the public about the increased risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular health complications associated with Low T treatment drugs.
Testosterone Medical Studies
In recent months, a growing number of similar lawsuits have been filed by former testosterone supplement users after concerns about cardiovascular health risks began surfacing. In November 2013, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) determined that testosterone treatments like Fortesta may increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and other serious side effects in older users, as well as younger ones with a history of heart disease. Two months later, an article published in the medical journal PLOS ONE found that Low T boosters may double the risk of heart attack in men over the age of 65, regardless of their heart history.
FDA to Investigate Testosterone Heart Risks
In response to the recent controversy, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has launched a safety review of all testosterone supplements. In addition to Fortesta, this investigation will include:
Endocrine Society Calls For Additional Studies
In February of 2014, the Endocrine Society requested that large-scale studies be conducted to help better understand the health risks associated with testosterone replacement therapy. The Society indicated that until evidence of cardiovascular safety is confirmed, patients should be made aware of the potential risks, and doctors should follow clinical practice guidelines to ensure appropriate prescribing practices.
