FDA Evaluating Heart Attack Risk of Testosterone Supplements

Concerns about the alleged potential for testosterone supplements like Fortesta to cause a heart attack are continuing to rise, amidst new studies which lend evidence to this link. On January 31, 2014, the FDA issued a Public Health Alert vowing to conduct a safety review of TRT products, despite no confirmed association between testosterone boosters and the risk for sudden cardiac death, cardiovascular arrest and other adverse health consequences.

JAMA Study on Testosterone Heart Risks

The first study that prompted the FDA to reconsider the safety of testosterone boosters like Fortesta appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in November 2013. This was an observational study of older men in the Veteran Affairs (VA) health system who had low serum testosterone and were undergoing coronary angiography procedures to look for coronary artery disease (CAD). Some of the test subjects were administered testosterone supplements while others were not. The median age of the men was about 60 years, and many had a pre-existing history of cardiovascular disease. The study suggested a 30% increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and sudden death among the men who took testosterone.

Fortesta Heart Attack Symptoms

A heart attack occurs when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a portion of the heart muscle gets blocked, and the heart is unable to acquire the oxygen it needs to continue working properly. If the flow of oxygenated blood is not restored quickly, the heart begins to die. Symptoms of a Fortesta heart attack include:

  • Chest pain / discomfort / pressure
  • Arm weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Discomfort in other parts of the upper body

How to Prevent a Heart Attack

These simple tips can do wonders to prevent a heart attack:

  • Make an appointment with your doctor to learn more about your specific health risks.
  • Quit smoking. People who quit smoking cut their heart attack risk by up to 50% in the first year alone.
  • Exercise. Walking just 30 minutes a day can significantly lower your risk of suffering a heart attack.
  • Modify your diet. Smart substitutions, healthy snacks and better prep methods all help tremendously. For example, with poultry, use the leaner light meat instead of the fattier dark meat, and be sure to remove the skin before eating.
