In January 2014, the FDA announced that it was investigating the safety of Fortesta and other popular testosterone supplements after they were linked to heart attacks, strokes, blood clots, and other serious side effects. In a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), testosterone users were nearly 30% more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or die compared to non-users.

Update: FDA Updates Testosterone Labeling with ‘Addiction and Dependence” Warning
January 18, 2017 – FDA has approved class-wide label changes for all prescription testosterone supplements to include information about a risk of abuse and dependence linked to the products. The new warnings are intended to alert prescribers that some patients may abuse TRT boosters, and that adverse outcomes may result.
What’s the Problem with Fortesta?
Fortesta is a topical gel testosterone supplement used to treat hypogonadism (clinically low levels of testosterone). Endo Pharmaceuticals, the company that makes Fortesta, claims the drug will treat the symptoms of low testosterone (“Low T”), which include decreased sex drive, lowered muscle mass, depression, and slumping energy levels.
However, despite these claims, recent studies have found that Fortesta and other testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) drugs may have the potential to cause serious (in some cases life-threatening) side effects.
On January 31, 2014, the Food & Drug Administration issued a Public Health Advisory announcing that it had launched an investigation into the link between testosterone boosters like Fortesta and cardiovascular side effects. This announcement came only four days after a study in the journal PLOS ONE determined that testosterone boosters doubled the heart attack risk in men aged 65 years and older.
Side Effects of Fortesta
- Heart Attack
- Stroke
- Blood clot
- Pulmonary embolism
- Arrhythmia
- Transient ischemic attacks (aka ‘mini-strokes’)
- Sudden death
About Fortesta Class Actions
Although we are a nationally recognized class action firm, the Products Liability Litigation Group at our law firm has decided against the filing of a Fortesta Class Action Lawsuit, and is currently filing individual claims on behalf of individuals and/or their family members who have been injured after taking Fortesta.
A class action is a type of lawsuit filed with the court on behalf of large group of people or “class” of individuals that have been injured or wronged. The class is represented by the law firm and the case is generally decided upon a single member of the class who is sometimes referred to as the “class representative or class rep.”
Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits Opposed To a Class Action
In some instances, a class action may offer some advantages, as they aggregate a large number of individualized claims into one representational lawsuit. The aggregation can increase the efficiency of the legal process, lower the costs of litigation and in some cases offer the solution to a common problem wherein small recoveries do not provide the incentive for any individual or law firm to file an individual lawsuit.
However, a class action suit can also be a detriment to many class members, as they are often forced into a blanket “low ball settlement” and higher attorney fees. At Schmidt & Clark, LLP we understand that our clients are suffering emotionally and economically due to loss of wages and/or high medical bills and we plan to maximize each client’s recovery by filing individual Fortesta Lawsuits on their behalf.
