What is Fortesta?
Fortesta Gel is designed to be applied by users, and has a reservoir of testosterone which administers the drug through the skin. It is marketed as a safe and effective way of undergoing testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). According to Endo Pharmaceuticals, the company that makes Fortesta, the gel protects other people from accidentally coming into contact with it during routine everyday activities.
Fatal Blood Risk Linked to Testosterone Boosters
Testosterone supplements like Fortesta have been linked to a nearly 30% increased risk of blood clots and other cardiac emergencies, according to a November 2013 article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Another study, which appeared in the medical journal PLOS ONE in January 2014, reported that testosterone boosters doubled the risk of heart attack in males over the age of 65, and tripled this risk in younger men with a pre-existing history of heart problems. This study included approximately 56,000 test subjects.
FDA Safety Alert
After investigating the two studies cited above, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) launched an investigation to learn more about the health risks associated with testosterone supplements like Fortesta. According to the FDA:
”The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in men taking FDA-approved testosterone products. We have been monitoring this risk and decided to reassess this safety issue based on the recent publication of two separate studies that each suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular events among groups of men prescribed testosterone therapy.”
Fortesta Blood Clot Symptoms
Blood clotting is a critical bodily process that prevents excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. Platelets and proteins in plasma work together to stop the bleeding by forming a clot over the ruptured vessel. Normally, the body will naturally dissolve the clot after the injury has healed. Sometimes, however, clots form inside of vessels without an injury or do not dissolve naturally. These situations can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.
Signs and symptoms of a Fortesta blood clot may include:
- Pain in the calf
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Coughing blood
If you have suffered a blood clot from Fortesta, your physician may prescribe you a blood thinner (anticoagulant) drug to treat it. For most patients, the treatment plan will include:
- For the first week, the patient will receive heparin, an anticoagulant that works rapidly.
- Heparin is injected under the skin. The patient will learn how to give themselves these shots, or a family member will do it for them.
- The patient will then begin taking warfarin pills by mouth. Approximately one week later, the patient will stop taking the shots. The patient will continue to take warfarin for an additional three to six months.
