What's the Problem?

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects:

  • 2011-2014 Ford Fiesta
  • 2013-2014 Ford Fusion
  • 2015 Ford Mustang
  • 2013-2015 Ford Escape
  • 2013-2015 Ford C-Max
  • 2012-2015 Ford Focus
  • 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect
  • 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ
  • 2015 Lincoln MKC

A component within the door latches of affected vehicles may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when it is not, NHTSA said. A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.

Ford is notifying owners and dealers will inspect and replace the door latches, free of charge.

This recall began in July 2020.

Ford Fiesta Class Action Lawsuit

Ford has been accused in a class action lawsuit of concealing a defect in certain Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus vehicles that can cause jerking, difficulty stopping, and serious engine problems. The complaint was filed against Ford Motor Company in a federal court in Delaware. The plaintiffs argue that Ford’s Powershift Transmission is “plagued by numerous problems and safety concerns.”

Internal documents from Ford suggest that the automaker had knowledge of transmission problems with the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus, yet chose to continue manufacturing and selling these vehicles anyway. As a result, Australia slapped Ford with a $10 million fine due to their “unconscionable conduct.” The company is currently being investigated for fraud by the U.S. Justice Department.

The class action further alleges that Ford’s use of cheap materials and a new transmission design, which is prone to overheating, caused the demise of the PowerShift name. According to the lawsuit, the transmission defect causes clutches to overheat, fail, and damage other powertrain components. Ford has never publicly acknowledged that this transmission defect exists, the complaint states.

Instead, Ford has “actively concealed and continues to conceal, the Transmission Defect by, among other things, telling customers that the symptoms associated with the Transmission Defect were ‘normal driving conditions," according to the lawsuit.
