Flu Shot Side Effects: Mild to Severe
Common mild flu shot side effects include (but are not limited to):
- Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given
- Sore, red or itchy eyes
If these problems occur, they usually begin soon after the shot and last 1-2 days. Additionally, life-threatening allergic reactions from vaccines have been known to occur in rare cases. When they do occur, it is usually within a few minutes to a few hours after the shot.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Linked to Vaccines
In 1976, a type of influenza vaccine was first associated with an extremely serious condition known as Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The main symptoms of GBS are weakness, numbness, tingling, and prickling of the extremities. GBS affects people of all ages and both genders, although males contract it more commonly than women, at a ratio of about 5-to-4.
Flu Shot & Transverse Myelitis (TM)
Transverse myelitis (TM) affects the nerves in the spinal cord, causing weakness in the legs, arms, & back, as well as numbness and loss of function. While not conclusively proven, there is a strong link between the flu vaccine and some cases of TM. In 2008, there was a much publicized case of a woman who was diagnosed with TM four days after receiving a flu shot.
What should I do if I have a reaction to a flu shot?
Signs of serious allergic reaction to a flu shot can include breathing problems, hoarseness or wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, a fast heartbeat, or dizziness. Call a doctor, or get to a doctor right away if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Tell your doctor what happened, the date and time it happened, and when you got the flu shot.
