What’s the Problem?
April 19, 2016 – In a settlement agreement filed in a Phoenix federal court, the U.S. Justice Department announced that Hildale and Colorado City had agreed to pay $55,000 each to settle claims in violation of the Fair Housing Act, according to FOX 13 News. Additionally, the defendants would pay about $1.4 million to 9 people who were found to have been discriminated against. Both sides would pay their own attorney’s fees, according to the agreement.
The Justice Department sued the towns, accusing local governments of discriminating against community members who didn’t belong to the FLDS, and of acting as agents for church leaders. After a trial that lasted weeks, the jury ruled in favor of the U.S. government. The settlement does not include any other penalties, which are expected to be decided at a hearing in Phoenix later this year.
