How Many Propane Tank Fires Occur Each Year?
Approximately 600 propane tank explosions occur each year in the United States, according to the CPSC. Each of these incidents is different, and is the product of separate circumstances, so it is impossible to accurately predict without examining the facts of each accident. However, some propane tank injuries are more likely to occur than others, such as:
- Severe burns – Burn injuries from a propane tank explosion are always extremely painful. While a 1st-degree burn or superficial burn only affects the top layer of skin, 2nd and 3rd-degree burns cause more extensive damage. Burn injuries can take years to fully heal from and cause significant limitations and impairments.
- Loss of limb – If a propane tank explodes when a person is adjusting the tank or otherwise in close proximity, the loss of fingers, a hand, arm, or other limbs is possible.
- Shrapnel injuries – The force of an exploding propane tank can eject metal shrapnel from the tank itself and surrounding objects into the air. This debris can cause severe cuts, become lodged in a victim’s eye, or otherwise cause severe injuries.
